What is entropion in Dogs?

What is it and why does it matter?
Have you ever noticed your dog’s eyes constantly tearing, looking red, or irritated? One possible cause could be a condition called entropion. But what exactly is entropion

What Is Entropion?
Entropion is an eye condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the surface of the eye. This leads to:

  • Pain and irritation
  • Excessive tearing
  • Red, inflamed eyes
  • Risk of corneal damage

If left untreated, entropion can lead to serious eye injuries and even permanent vision loss.

How to Recognize Entropion

Common signs of entropion include:

  • Squinting or keeping the eyes closed
  • Excessive tearing
  • Redness or swelling of the eyes
  • Pawing at the eyes
  • Decreased activity or signs of discomfort

Certain breeds are more prone to entropion. We would like to indicate this through the FCI groups such as:

  • Group 2: Pinscher and Schnauzer - Molossoid Breeds - Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs
Examples: Rottweiler, Boxer, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bulldog, Shar Peis, Bulldogs
  • Group 5: Spitz and Primitive Types
Examples: Siberian Husky, Akita (American type) and the Akita Inu (Japanees type), Chow Chow
  • Group 6: Scent Hounds and Related Breeds
    Examples: Beagle, Bloodhound
  • Group 7: Pointing Dogs
    Examples: German Shorthaired Pointer, Setters
  • Group 8: Retrievers, Flushing Dogs, Water Dogs
    Examples: Retrievers, Cocker Spaniel

Or any mix between those breeds. However, it can occur in any dog.

What Causes Entropion?

Entropion can be:

  • Congenital: In some cases, entropion is present from birth, especially in certain breeds that are genetically predisposed to this condition.
  • Aging: The most common cause of entropion is aging. As dogs grow older, the muscles and tissues around the eyes can lose strength and elasticity, causing the eyelid to roll inward.
  • Scarring: Scar tissue from previous injuries or surgeries can also lead to entropion by pulling the eyelid into an abnormal position.

How Is Entropion Treated?
The only lasting solution for entropion is usually surgical correction. A veterinarian will remove a small section of skin from the eyelid so it sits in the correct position again. Important things to know:

  • Surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
  • Recovery is typically quick, with eye ointment and pain relief needed afterward.
  • Most dogs recover fully and no longer experience discomfort.

Why Prompt Treatment Is Important
Untreated entropion can cause permanent eye damage. Quick action prevents unnecessary pain and long-term health issues for your dog.
